The ISP for the Universities backup internet connected has experienced a service outage due to a commercial power outage.  Current estimates of power restoration are for July 21st.  The Universities primary internet connection is up and operational.  There has been no disruption to the Universities internet services.

On Thursday April 11th starting at 5pm, Fiber maintenance will occur to prepare for the move of our MARIA 100Gbs link from Pocahontas to the new data center at TOC.  There are redundant paths to the internet, Internet 2, and other off campus resources, however a momentary delay while circuits switch to the redundant path is possible.

On Friday 2/2/24 from 5 AM - 6 AM, users will exprience a short internet outages while we perform critical  troubleshooting of the  100Gig Internet connection from VCU.  The outages will occur for approximately 3-5 mins and there will be 2-3 of those in that hour.  We expect to main our internet connection during this change via the secondary internet connection out of Harris Hall data center.

On Sunday November 5th starting at 6pm Network Services will be replacing EOL gear in Harris Hall.  This work will create a temporary loss of connectivity for site to site VPN connections such as RPD, AWS, T4, LabCorp, and Qatar.  The CenturyLink ISP connection will also experience a temporary loss of connectivity however internet connectivity is not expected to be disrupted.

VCU's Jamf Pro instance is currently experiencing a disruption that may stem from yesterday's network issue - TS Endpoint is currently investigating and has open cases with Jamf Pro Support. 

Impact:

  • Devices are not checking-in with Jamf Pro & as a result will not receive policies or updated configuration profiles.
  • Self Service is intermittently unavailable, depending on network location.
  • Make Me Admin (temp account elevation) may not be available for applicable users
  • Enrollment of new machines may be temporarily unavailable.

Workaround:

  • Department technicians may need to assist with elevation requests while Make Me Admin is unavailable.
  • New device enrollment may need to be temporarily put on hold while issues are resolved.
  • End-users should still be able to login & work from devices, the primary impact being Make Me Admin is unavailable.

Troubleshooting:

  • TS Endpoint is reviewing on-site infrastructure, configuration, and connectivity
  • Open support case, high priority, with Jamf Pro Support

VCU Jamf services are back online after an outage beginning on 10/04/23 and lasting until 10/10/23. The VCU Self Service app is now available for login & use.


Please be aware that VCU managed Apple devices may receive a brief burst of policy updates which were queued prior and during the outage. Please contact department IT support if there are issues with device functionality.


A brief summary - on Tuesday afternoon, Jamf engineers were able to restore connectivity to Jamf Cloud. Overnight, we observed stable server performance and reliability. Jamf Support has indicated that they do not believe this issue should recur but we are still investigating the root cause. There is general evidence that supports looping processes in the Jamf backend database, which eventually starved the server of computing resources and broke connectivity with VCU endpoints.

Network Services will be replacing a core router at Harris Hall on Sunday July 23rd starting at 6pm.  A network outage is expected to be minimal as the network cores are redundantly designed, however there could be a brief reconvergence. All of the PE's that connect to the Harris core also have redundant connections with the Poca core.  This maintenance should be completed by 11pm.
