VCU Campus Network
This morning Network Services physically moved the border router for our primary ISP from Poca DC and over to the new TOC DC. The router is now staged and at 9 PM tonight we will being the primary link online.
A minor outage is likely as traffic changes over. During this time, the existing sessions would be rebuilt via the application or the user accessing the system.
The 100G MARIA link is now operational. We are back to normal status with both ISP links working as expected.
What:
On Aug 14th from 9 AM to 12 Noon, Network Services will be physically moving the primary internet routers from the Poca data center to TOC the data center. During this move, we will be connected to the internet out of our secondary internet router and ISP out of Harris Hall.
Impact:
During this move we do not expect to have any downtime for internet access because our secondary site and router will take over to allow full internet access from there.
The router has been moved and staged to go online under an emergency CR 14600 at 9 PM on 8/14/2024.
What: Network Services will decommission old MedNet DNS servers.
When: Aug 5th, 2024 7 AM
Why: All MedNet Network 172.31.0.0/16 users have been using a unique set of DNS servers that allowed VCUH name resolution. These servers are no longer needed and they do not serve the same purpose as they once did.
Action: If you have statically assigned an IP address and DNS on a device, please make a note to change the DNS servers on those devices from 192.168.8.101/192.168.8.102 to 192.168.8.1/192.168.8.2.
MedNet DNS servers 192.168.8.101 and 192.168.8.102 have been decommissioned. Please update the settings to use 192.168.8.1 and 192.168.8.2 in their place.
Informational Notification:
The MARIA 100Gig Internet link will be down from 12:01 AM - 6:00 AM on July 24th. The vendor is replacing equipment at the central Ashburn site. VCU will be operating at full functionality via the secondary internet connection.

On Friday July 19th, Network Services will be working with our ISP Segra to migrate our remote site connections from POCA to TOC. During this maintenance, remote locations will not have internet connectivity (network and wireless). Here are the location impacted by this maintenance:
I-Lot Deck
5285 Shawnee Rd
3701 John Tyler Hwy
2235 Staples Mill Rd
1330 N. 26th St
3300 Gallows Rd
1314 W. Main St
100 W. Franklin St
1040 Oliver Hill Way (Steam Plant / PPD Admin Bldg / Facilities Warehouse)
All of the remote site connections have been successfully migrated from POCA to TOC.
On July 18th 2024, from 8 PM to 12 AM, Network services will be migrating Layer 3 routes from the Poca Data Center and over to the TOC Data Center.
This is a required change to meed the deadline of vacating the old Poca Data Center.
During this change systems housed and hosted at the Poca Data Centers will see a momentary outage/blip.
Our execution plan consists of executing smaller changes first and then testing to validate if those changes took place as expected. Once that positive validation is met, we will proceed with further changes. If we run into issues, this change window time will be used to troubleshoot and revert changes before the change window closes.
We’re back! The VCU network should be up and running. Thanks for bearing with us!
